The challenge

Frenchman's Reef is one of St. Thomas's landmark resorts, and the 2017 hurricanes hit it hard. The recovery assessment documented damaged exterior wall systems and shutters, extensive water intrusion, and impacts to underground utilities.

Bringing a resort of this size back means running many buildings and systems at once, on a remote island, with the weather that caused the damage never far away.

The plan covered renovated main-tower guestrooms and new lobby and public spaces, inside a wider program that also included a new power system, a wastewater treatment plant, and a seawater treatment system.

Scope

What we managed

4 items of scope

Stabilis deployed its own project management and field teams and directly managed all site activities on the ground, across:

  • The main tower
  • Buoy Haus
  • The harborside units
  • The resort's power generation plant

Our teams ran the site day to day across these areas, coordinating the trades and the sequence through a complex, multi-building recovery.

How we delivered it

Recovery work is only as good as the team on the ground. Here is how Stabilis ran it.

01

Our own teams on site

We deployed Stabilis project management and field teams and took direct control of all site activities, rather than managing from a distance.

02

Many fronts at once

We coordinated work across the main tower, Buoy Haus, the harborside units, and the power plant, keeping a multi-building site moving as one program.

03

Buildings and systems together

The wider program tied the guestrooms and public spaces to new power, wastewater, and seawater systems, the infrastructure a remote resort needs to run on its own.

The result

Stabilis's own teams stood up and directly ran a full recovery site across the resort, from the main tower and harborside units to the power plant, before the wider rebuild was placed on hold in 2020 as COVID-19 halted work across the industry.

What it proved is the capability that matters most in disaster recovery: putting our own people in charge on the ground, and running a complex, multi-building program on a remote island under real pressure.
